Are there any guidelines for bluffing in poker and when to bluff? This is a common question and we need to make something clear. The importance of bluffing isn’t as much as you might think. While it is important to understand bluffing and bet strategy, actually knowing how to execute a bluff is not necessary.
How Important Is Bluffing?
Bluffing is not as important as you might think. You should first of all, never start a poker session and have in mind the intention of bluffing at some point in the game. Bluffing is a technique used to win chips when executed properly, but the prerequisite to winning from bluffing relies on convincing the opponent to fold. Many conditions need to align to pull off a successful and profitable bluff, so again, we repeat, bluffing is cool when pulled off but not as important as you might think.
When Should I Bluff?
First of all, you should only bluff when you feel you can convince your opponent(s) to fold. General guidelines here are that you don’t need to bluff as much as you might’ve thought. If pulled off at the right times, it will make you some money, but bluffing is no key strategy to winning poker, playing smart poker is. Times you should bluff are when you think you can get your opponent to fold, say if you are against beginner players. If you aren’t sure if a bluff is going to be profitable, do not pursue it.
Why Bluff Then?
Over time you will improve your game and find that bluffing will become easier as you gain experience. Eventually, you will be able to spot profitable bluffing opportunities and the bluff frequency will increase, and you will use this to win more money in your poker sessions.
