When playing poker online, there is no telling who you will play against and what poker styles you will encounter. There are lots of playing styles out there and one of the most common poker personas is the bully. They aren’t hard to find in poker and if you are in online cash game tables, it doesn’t take long to cross one. What do you do if you encounter a bully in online poker and how do you spot them?
Spotting a bulling in online poker
A bully is the player who bets almost like a maniac and likes to play with a great deal of risk in order to win money at the table. He or she will raise often and bet a lot of chips each raise, typically scaring off beginner players and winning pots off of folds. They can be frustrating to play against and therefore, we’ve come up with ways to counter the bully.
What to do when you encounter a bully in online poker
People typically panic when they are playing against a bully in online poker. Balanced poker players are not used to raising often or big pots, so it is easy to fall into a trap when playing a poker bully.
To adjust to their style of play, most of the time you will be lured in by constant raising. The bully wants to force you to call weak hands often, and be tempted to re-raise on pots that you would typically leave and fold.
What you need to do when playing against a bully in poker is call more and raise less. Folding hands is what they want you to do. Instead, call more often. Do not be afraid as the bully will raise nearly every hand, and be forced to bluff weak hands often. If you call the hands, you will begin taking some chips in no time. At the same time, raise hands when you have strong cards. Do not be afraid to re-raise when the bully has already raised because often they will have no cards.
