It is important to understand bet sizing in online poker as it helps you make successful bets and interpret your opponents’ bets in a better way. Size your bets effectively in order to get the poker results you want. Not knowing how to size your bets can land you in big trouble, giving a full hand to your opponents to make you easy target at the table. How you raise the amount in online poker or decide your bet size is a very important decision. You have to do it correctly to dominate on the playing table. Let’s understand how to raise in online poker:
A 2x Bet: A 2x open preflop, also known as a min-raise, is the most preferred among online poker players. However, opening by betting minimum can cause difficulties for you in the game, as you will fail to put as many chips in the pot for you to win when you flop a good hand. Also, you will have to re-raise. It is always suggested to raise larger opens as you cannot call a 3x Bet with min-raise preflop with marginal hands.
A 3x Bet: This is the standard opening raise size in the initial stages of the tournament. In 3x Bet, the first few levels, your stack are larger than the blinds in play such that there is no point of opening for any less. That’s the reason why most of the players play tight and raise a decent range with at least a 3x raise which depicts that you aren't ignoring the early blind levels. As the game moves forward, and you will be drawn towards the 25-35 big blind level, now it might not be feasible to open every hand with a 3x raise, as a result, most of the poker players tend to shift down a gear.
2.2x-2.5x Bets: Those who are pro, they must choose to open between 2.2x and 2.5x. In the middle to late stages of tournaments, you will find all kinds of stack sizes seated at your table varying from the big stack with lots of chips to the short stack and those in the middle that have average chips and are comfortable, at least for now.
